Privacy policy

This policy covers asc.news and the ASC News email briefing (“the Service”). ASC News is a US trade publication for the ambulatory surgery center sector, and the Service is intended for readers in the United States.

ASC News is published by Brent Reilly, a sole proprietor doing business as “ASC News” (“we,” “us”). We are the party responsible for the personal information described here, and you can reach us at hello@asc.news or through our contact page.

What we collect

Email address and signup details. When you subscribe to the briefing or join the Pro early-access waitlist, we collect your email address. We also record details about how you signed up so we know what’s working: the page you signed up from, your reason for signing up (newsletter or Pro waitlist), the website that referred you (from your browser’s referrer header), and any campaign parameters in the link you followed (UTM source, medium, and campaign). This information is stored with our email provider, Beehiiv.

Usage data from analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the site is used. On each visit it collects standard usage and device data — pages viewed, the approximate location and device/browser type derived from your IP address, and a small set of events we deliberately fire: page views, clicks on calls-to-action, newsletter signups, Pro-waitlist requests, and signup errors. PostHog stores a random identifier in your browser’s local storage to recognize a returning visit on the same device. We do not send your email address or name to PostHog, we do not build advertising profiles, we have automatic event capture turned off, and we do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.

We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information, and we make no automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.

Cookies, local storage, and your tracking choices

We don’t run a cookie consent banner because we don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Our analytics relies on a random identifier stored in your browser’s local storage, on a US-based service (PostHog, us.i.posthog.com), to count visits and conversions. We treat this as a legitimate interest in understanding and improving the Service. You can opt out at any time: clear your browser’s local storage for asc.news, which removes the analytics identifier on that device. Email

When you subscribe to the briefing, we send a confirmation email and only begin sending the briefing after you confirm (double opt-in). Pro-waitlist signups are recorded but do not receive the briefing welcome email.

Every briefing email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops all sends, and we honor unsubscribe requests promptly. If you later choose to subscribe again, that re-subscription is a fresh opt-in — we treat your new signup as new consent rather than silently re-adding a previously unsubscribed address.

Your privacy rights and choices

You can ask us to:

• Know what personal information we hold about you and how we use it;
• Delete it; and
• Correct inaccurate information.

We do not sell or share your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

To make a request, email hello@asc.news with the subject Privacy, or use our contact page. We may need to verify your identity — typically by confirming you control the email address on file — before acting on a request, and we aim to respond within 45 days.

When you ask us to delete your data, here’s what we actually do: we delete your subscriber record at Beehiiv (email address, signup details, and the associated history). Our analytics data is not tied to your email address — we never send it to PostHog — so we cannot look you up there; you can remove the analytics identifier on your own device at any time by clearing your browser’s local storage.

Who we share data with

We share data only with the service providers that run the product, each acting on our instructions and each based in the United States:

• Beehiiv — email delivery (stores your email address and signup details);
• Vercel — site hosting; and
• PostHog — analytics (us.i.posthog.com).

We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights.

Children

The Service is a business publication intended for adults working in or covering the ambulatory surgery center sector. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. You must be at least 18 to subscribe.

Security

We rely on our service providers’ security controls to protect the limited data we hold. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes

We’ll note material changes to this policy here with a new “last updated” date.
